YouTube Video Showcase - Responsive Slider, Lightbox Player and Automatic Thumbnails

Your videos are already made. Put them on the shop.

Product demonstrations, unboxings, tutorials, brand films — the work is done and the videos are sitting on YouTube. What is usually missing is a decent way to show them on the storefront: something that does not mean uploading thumbnails by hand, does not send the customer off to YouTube mid-visit, and does not drag a slider library and a copy of jQuery onto every page.

Paste a link. That is the setup.

Copy any YouTube address — from the browser bar or the Share button — give the video a title, paste the link, and save. The moment the link is recognised, the Add a video form shows you the thumbnail pulled straight from YouTube and a green tick with the parsed video ID, so you can see it understood the link before you commit. No image upload and no API key.

Every link format is accepted: youtube.com/watch?v=…, the short youtu.be/… form, Shorts, embed links, live links, and even a bare 11-character video ID. What is not accepted is a playlist or channel link, because neither identifies a single video — and the form tells you so rather than saving something broken.

The video plays on your page, not YouTube's

Clicking a thumbnail opens the video in a distraction-free lightbox over your shop, closed with a click or the Escape key. It uses YouTube's privacy-enhanced no-cookie player, so a visitor who never plays a video is not tracked by it.

A slider that handles small screens on its own

Choose how many videos sit in a row on desktop — anything from one to eight. That number is a maximum, not a fixed count: below 992 px the module caps it at four, below 768 px at three, and below 576 px at two, with native touch swiping. You do not configure a breakpoint, and you do not get a row of eight postage stamps on a phone.

Navigation arrows and dots are optional, and both hide themselves automatically when every video already fits on screen — no dead arrows next to a slider with nothing to slide.

Autoplay that knows when to stop

Autoplay steps through the videos on a timer you set, and it pauses when it should: while the visitor's mouse is over the slider, while a video is actually playing in the lightbox, and while the browser tab is in the background. A slider that keeps advancing behind the video someone is watching is worse than no autoplay at all.

A video list you can actually manage

The Your videos list gives you up and down arrows for ordering, a Visible badge you click to hide or show a video, and edit or delete on every row. Any video can be restricted to a single shop language or shown to everyone — useful when the German tutorial should not appear on the French storefront. A video whose language has since been removed from the shop is flagged Deleted language and hidden rather than silently disappearing without explanation.

Light enough not to matter

One small CSS file and one small JavaScript file, loaded only when there is something to show. No jQuery, no slick, no colorbox, nothing fetched from a CDN. Front-office assets are cache-busted with the module version, so an update reaches returning visitors without asking anyone to hard-refresh.

Each slide is a real link to the video that the script then upgrades into the lightbox — so if JavaScript fails or is switched off, the thumbnails still work as ordinary links instead of becoming dead images.

Put it where you want it

The slider sits on the homepage through displayHome by default. Move or copy it to any other display hook from Design → Positions, or drop it straight into a theme template with {widget name='youtubeslider'}.

What versions 2.0.x fixed

Version 1.x loaded jQuery twice from a CDN, its configuration page failed outright on modern PrestaShop versions, refreshing the page after a save duplicated videos, and an empty URL produced a broken grey slide. All of that is gone by design: the module no longer uses jQuery at all, every save is validated and redirected, and a video cannot be saved without a valid YouTube link.

The 2.0.x line then fixed three real-world theme problems: the slider spanning the entire browser width on edge-to-edge home zones like Hummingbird's (now capped to the theme content width and centred), the horizontal scrollbar its next-arrow caused, and a mobile overflow on CSS Grid hook zones where the container sized itself to its unscrolled content instead of the viewport. Version 2.0.2 also fixed an upgrade that could disable the module when a single hook registration returned false.

Compatibility

PrestaShop 1.7, 8 and 9, in eight languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and Turkish. Works with any theme, with no jQuery and no external libraries. Upgrading from 1.x migrates your videos automatically — IDs are extracted from the stored URLs, and any old slide saved without a valid URL is kept but marked Hidden so you can fix it rather than lose it. Uninstalling removes the module's table and settings; your videos on YouTube are of course untouched.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a YouTube API key?

No. Thumbnails come straight from YouTube's own image addresses, so there is nothing to register and no quota to run out of.

Which link formats work?

All the usual ones: watch?v=, youtu.be, Shorts, embed and live links, or a bare video ID. Playlist and channel links do not work, because they do not identify a single video.

Does the visitor leave my shop to watch?

No. The video opens in a lightbox over your page, using YouTube's no-cookie player, and closes with a click or the Escape key.

How does it behave on a phone?

It reduces the videos per row on its own — capped at four below 992 px, three below 768 px and two below 576 px — and supports native touch swiping. Your setting is the desktop maximum; there is no breakpoint for you to configure.

Can I show different videos in different languages?

Yes. Each video is either restricted to one shop language or shown to all of them.

My thumbnail is a grey placeholder. That is the image YouTube serves for a video that is private, deleted or only just uploaded. Check that the video is public and reachable.

A video will not play in the lightbox. Its owner has disabled embedding on YouTube. That is a YouTube-side restriction, and the lightbox shows YouTube's own message when it happens.

Can I move the slider off the homepage?

Yes, from Design → Positions to any display hook, or with {widget name='youtubeslider'} anywhere in your theme.
